Today Ekin and Miriam Yeung attended the post office to launch the new smart identity cards required by the Beijing Government. The cards will contain an electronic information chip. Many people in Hong Kong are upset by the new cards and feel that the Government has required them because of SARS. Ekin expressed that he did not feel that SARS influenced the decision, and he appealed to everyone to stop blaming the Government.
Ekin agreed however that the response to the SARS epidemic was slow, but again people shouldn't blame the Government as this can only cause the situation to deteriorate. He also said the newspapers shouldn't exaggerate as this was seriously affecting the economy, they should use optimistic wording.
"In fact, every month
have a good many people catch cold, but more die from traffic accidents. The
SARS virus temporarily has no useful medicine to control it, however the people
die, the ratio is too high a count."
In June Ekin will have two movies released. When asked about them he leveled
with reporters and said that he was very worried about the box office because
the virus had affected the economy.
Ekin was also asked about his record contract with EEG. He said that the contract had ceased, but right now have to manage SARS. He said it would be at least September before he would make any announcement about a recording contract.
