Mingpao - article in Chinese

Ekin Cheng Yee-Kin was interviewed by Mingpao News about his childhood and his memories of growing up in Government housing. Ekin grew up in a poor neighborhood and has many memories of the Lok Man Estate in To Kwa Wan. Ekin was happy to show the reporters around.

"I have been moved from here for about ten years now. My parents lived here for a while after I left, but they have not lived here now for seven years. It doesn't seem to have changed much except the the buildings are painted a different color."

Many of the people living here remember Ekin and asked him why he hadn't been to visit. Ekin and his family lived in the 15th building. Many of the memories he had were of suicides, accidents and deaths. When asked why all his memories were of horrors, he responded that when you were young these things made a bigger impression and so were the things that came to mind first.

Ekin said that he even considered suicide once by jumping from the 15th floor. When he was 8 or 9 years old he got a really bad grade at school. He was afraid to go home and tell his parents, because they would be very upset with him. He said he stood and thought that if he jumped they wouldn't be able to blame me anymore. It was really stupid and later I found out that once I was punished life went on as usual.

Ekin, his brother and their friends played badminton and soccer in a large hallway in his building. He also learned to skateboard in the playground at the front. He told reporters that he would get bruises all over his body and his mother was not happy about it.

Ekin moved his parents out of this Estate once he could afford to do so. He returned the apartment to the Government because he felt that there are many people who need help and a place to live.

Ekin has invested in real estate but has not been lucky. The housing market in Hong Kong has done poorly. Ekin had to pay a lot in mortgages, and his father worried and wanted to try and help him. Ekin had to tell his dad that he would take care of it. He is pleased that he has continued to have plenty of work to enable him to meet his obligations. He has since sold several of the properties.

Recently, Ekin bought a house in Marina Cove, Sai Kung, New Territories. It is reported to have cost him $6,000,000 HK. He said that he is enjoying having a house near to the sea. He is very happy with it.

Today Ekin participated in a Tag Heuer promotion. He talked about his diving experience in Layang-Layang, Malaysia with the Malaysian Navy and fellow actor Daniel Wu. He gave a brochure with photographs of the dive to fans who attended the event.

In interviews with reporters, Ekin said that there is no environmental pollution in Layang-Layang. He also noted that it would be cheaper to purchase a whole island in Malaysia than to buy an appartment in Hong Kong. He was also asked if he would consider an underwater wedding. Ekin replied that it was a good suggestion but he would have to teach the priest and Shan Shan how to dive first. "What about Gigi?" he was asked. Laughing, Ekin said he would teach her later.
