Synopsis

Sky ( Ekin Cheng) a spoiled rich kid races on the underground circuit because his father did. He is arrogant and believes himself to be the best. One race he goes far with his bet and winning the race breaks his opponents leg.

Unfortunately, the opponents brother Ting Fung(Simon Yam) who has just been released from jail is a serious racer who raced and beat Sky's father. When Ting Fung challenges Sky to a race, he isn't prepared for the high stakes that are involved, when they agree to bet Sky's garage for the stakes. Sky persuades his mechanic Paddy (Patrick Tam) to over modify the car against his better judgement.

When the race takes place the car spins out of control killing Sky's girlfriend. Somehow narcotics have been placed in Sky's car and he is framed for possession.

Beaten, disgraced and mourning the loss of his girlfriend ( Kelly Lin), Sky heads off to Thailand to look for his natural father Black Tone (Blackie Ko). In the process he is robbed and purued by Maddie and his henchmen. Escaping with help from a Thai who knew his father, Sky is pointed in the right direction.

Finally finding him, Sky is saddened to realize that his father is no longer the daredavil he has dreamed of and admired for so long. However, as they spend time together, Sky learns something about life and himself, finally realizing that there is more to life than car racing and wealth.

Paddy's sister Nancy, ( Cecilia Cheung) has had a crush on Sky for a long time. Finding out where he is she heads out to Thailand, as she turns 18, hoping to become his new girlfriend. Unfortunately for her, Sky is still mourning over his dead girlfriend and also he considers her to be too young.

Meanwhile back in Hong Kong Paddy decides to try and take revenge by racing against Ting Fung. Killed in the ensuing race, Sky and Nancy return to Hong Kong in time to visit him in the Morgue.

Revenge must be taken and Sky and his team set out to build a car that can beat Ting Fung once and for all. Using Paddy's notes the car is built and the race set up. Sky now much more mature, allows Nancy to ride shotgun with him in the final showdown.

Of course Sky wins the race easily because he has learned to be humble. Victorious the crew finally sets fire to the car, presumably to indicate that his racing career is over, they all walk off into the the Hong Kong night.

Review

This is a story of racing, honor and revenge. Ekin's portrayal of the spoiled rich kid who races in the underground circuit, although not a deeply drawn character is well portrayed.

Sky has many of the same characteristics as Ho Nam, mistakes followed by righteousness. Brooding over a lost girlfriend, has been one of Andy Lau's reccurring themes. But Ekin has always done anguish and brooding to perfection. The movie also gives Ekin the opportunity to show off his perfect body.

Kelly Lin is great as the object of Sky's desires, and after the love scene in the car at the beginning of the movie it is clear why after her death he misses her dreadfully.

Cecilia Cheung's character Nancy is extremely simplistic and it is not one of Cecilia's best roles. Patrick Tam as her disabled brother, however, is truly beautifully acted. Jerry Lam as the Judas character also turns in a solid performance.

Veteran actors Blackie Ko and Simon Yam turn in adequate performances, but nothing spectacular from either one of them.

The car racing while fun and exciting relied rather too heavily on computer graphics to give the illusion of ludicrous speeed. The motor bike race in Thailand, where Sky learns when not to be afraid of speed is probably the best race sequence.

The movie is available on VCD and DVD. The DVD features a Cantonese and Mandarin track and subtitles in both English and Chinese.
