Synopsis

Jill ( Karina Lam) loves Chi On ( Hu Bing) but is destined not to be his one and only girlfriend, but always the second one.Chi On is a dermatologist and as such is surrounded by many women, However he maintains that Jill is the only one who understands him. For this reason she refuses to give up hope that she will be the only love in his life eventually. Jack ( Ekin Cheng) Has moved to Hong Kong to be near his girlfriend Grace ( Bobo Chan). However the first time that Jill sees him he is upset with Grace because she has been cheating on him with another boyfriend whom it turns out she has been dating already for many years. That evening Jill overhears Chi On being dumped by his current girlfriend, she is ecstatic and turning quickly gets bumped in the eye by the violinist. Retreating to the kitchen she finds herself face to face with Jack. It turns out that Jason has asked him to be a chef at the restaurant and take over once he retires.

Jason ( Eric Tsang) the Head Chef at Casa Nostra is a character. He explains that this strange woman is just Jill whom he likens to a banana. The other female worker he likens to an apple, much to Jack's amusement.Jill however, is not impressed, she thinks he is arrogant and a womanizer, because he is always taking pictures of the diners. Her dislike intensifies when he suggests taking Chi On's favorite meal off the menu.

Walking her imaginary dog in the area where she lives, once again Jill sees Jack. This time he is drinking and is unsympathetic to his girlfriend's pleas. Jill is appalled, of course he sees her, and is amused by her pretend dog, pretending to be bitten by it. After that, of course, Jill likes him even less.

At the restaurant Jack is making changes. Jill is still unimpressed. However, when she finds out that Chi On is seeing another girl she is distraught and keeps making coffee. Jason tells her that she has the wrong idea about Jack. Finally Jack sits with her and tells her his own story of heartbreak. The fact that his girlfriend, Grace, lied to him that she was on a trip when in fact she was in Hong Kong with another man. It turns out that she had been seeing this man for seven years and was with him when she met Jack. Realizing that they both have the similar situation Jill finds herself warming a little to Jack.

Living in the same area they agree to walk together. Jack pets the pretend dog making Jill smile. At that moment a neighbor of Jill's comes running to tell Jill her mother's apartment is flooding. Turns out that there is a leak in the bathroom and Jack sets to to fix it. Jill's mother is deaf, but she is immediately taken with Jack and wants to know if Jill likes him. Jill says he is just a coworker. She gets a call from Chi On and he makes her cry. Hearing her crying Jack is concerned. Her mother asks him if he has a girlfriend using the phone to communicate. Jack tells her to leave Jill alone because her heart is broken, Jill's mother who is perceptive wants to know if his heart is broken too.

Jack and Jill now walk the pretend dog together.Even resuscitating it when it inadvertently gets run over. Until one day Grace turns up at the restaurant.
Jill persuades Jack to take the initiative and go down and kiss her, which he does and they are reconciled at least for the current time. Jill meanwhile has a date with Chi On, but as she arrives he calls to say he will be late. Jill decides to wait for him but then realizes she has forgotten the key to his apartment. She calls Jack while she is waiting and they talk until Jack too has to meet Grace for dinner.

Jill finally asks Jack if he has seen his girlfriend's other boyfriend or if he is afraid to. They decide to stake out Grace and follow her so Jack can see the other man. He turns out to be a pilot and Jack finally sit's opposite him in the airport. Grace arriving see's them both there and is somewhat embarrassed. Jack finally asks her if she was to get married which would it be. Turns out that it would be the pilot, and eventually the two of them come to Jack to ask him to make the cake for the wedding. Jill tries to make out that this can't be done, but Jack offers to do it for their wedding gift.

Jill helps him to make the cake and also goes with him to chose a gift for Grace. She tries on a necklace and while wearing it Jack realizes that he really likes Jill a lot and is quite taken with her smile. The necklace is bought for Grace however. When Jack and Jill arrive to deliver the cake, Grace mistakes the sound of the car horn as a sign that Jack has come for her and she rushes out and drives off back to his apartment.

Once there Jack tells her that this was not the case and he had no intention of stopping her wedding. Grace is furious and throws his gift back at him. After this Jack and Jill are more comfortable with each other, although Jacks feelings for her are intensifying. For her birthday party he makes a cake. Unfortunately, Chi On turns up with a cake made by a famous chef. Jill spends the evening with Chi On while Jack watches jealously. Then Jack receives a phone call about Jason who is having a crisis. Calling Jill they both go over there to find Jason drunk and still grieving over the loss of his wife from cancer finding that he can't live without her. Jack and Jill comfort him and dance with him and each other until he finally passes out.

Leaving they return to Jack's apartment where he gives Jill her birthday present, which is a real dog. Jack can't help himself and kisses Jill who responds, however though she wakes up in his bed nothing has transpired as she had passed out. Panic stricken she takes off. Jack had taken a picture of her sleeping which he makes large and hangs in the restaurant. That evening the staff are taking bets as to whether Jill will end up with Chi On or Jack. Chi On wants her to leave and go to Shanghai with him. Jill rejects his offer and gives him his apartment keys back. Entering the restaurant she sees the picture and finds Jack waiting for her. The dog is wearing the necklace and Jack explains that he found that he can't live without her smile, and the movie ends with a new relationship about to begin.

Review

This movie is yet another story of romantic relationships. Ekin and Karina both qualify as the other lover. Karina because she knows that her would be lover Hu Bing is seeing other women, and Ekin because his long time girlfriend played by Bobo Chan has another long term relationship with a pilot played by Hayma Go.The audience of course is well aware that Ekin and Karina will eventually end up together. And the two of them have a considerable amount of on screen chemistry.

Ekin Cheng as Jack makes an endearing likeable guy, who just wants to find the right girl.At the restaurant Ekin is continually taking pictures presumably to showcase Canon cameras for whom he is a spokesman. His sadness and frustration at the duplicity of his girlfriend
allows Ekin seems to be a more mature persona in this film and the role allows him to show as much range as is possible in a lightweight romantic comedy. He seems to be comfortable in this kind of role and his handsome appearance makes him ideal as a romantic lead.

Eric Tsang as usual provides an excellent supporting actor to bring both humor and pathos to the the movie. As the Head Chef he is endearing to both his staff and the diners. However his grief at the death of his wife is used as an instrument to bring Jack and Jill closer together. This is somewhat contrived as it doesn't seem believable that his friends and co-workers would not know about his wife and their relationship.

Karina is as always the beauty of the movie. All the males in the movie could not fail to be enamored of her. The initial distrust and animosity towards Jack is tempered by his willingness to help her mother and also how he listen to her despair at being the second girl and encourage her to fight for him. Slowly she accepts him as a co worker and friend. As they are thrown together more and more she also realizes that he in fact might be the one for her.

The movie has romance, humor and pathos, however it is a lighthearted movie without depth to the characters. Karina and Ekin both play their roles with skill however, the script and the cartoon like interludes detract from the movie.

The supporting actors and actresses all give spirited performances. Notably Yan Ng as the other female co worker at the restaurant, Nikki Cheung as Hu Bing's second girlfriend, and Hui Sui Hung as Ekin's uncle.

The movie is produced Eric Tsang and distributed by Mei Ah. It is available on both DVD and VCD. The DVD contains both a Cantonese and Mandarin track with both Chinese and English subtitles.
